There’s much to love about a vacation to Hawai‘i, namely the islands’ stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture. Now you can add another key element that will not only heighten your time in paradise, but also allow you to give back and experience Hawai‘i on a much deeper and more connected level.

That relationship between people and place grows stronger every time you malama, or give back. When you give back — to the land, the ocean, the wildlife, the forest, the fishpond, the community — you become part of a virtuous circle that enriches everything and everyone, including your experience as a visitor.

One way to malama Hawai‘i is through reforestation efforts. Volunteers are led on a guided hike and are able to help restore native forests by removing invasive species and returning native plants to the landscape. In doing so, visitors are helping to advance the biology and ecology of the place, the future of those rare species that live here, and also preserve Hawaiian culture because each of those species has a story behind it.

Several organizations across Hawai‘i offer opportunities for visitors to pay it forward, like beach cleanups, native tree planting and more.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Malama Loko Ea (O‘ahu) — Help restore a native Hawaiian fishpond.
  • Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (O‘ahu) — Dedicate and plant a native tree at Gunstock Ranch.
  • Battleship Missouri Memorial (O‘ahu) — Help restore one of the world’s most famous battleships.
  • Pacific Whale Foundation (Maui) — Help clean up Maui’s coastline.
  • Redline Rafting (Maui) — Pick up debris from beaches, hiking trails and parks.
  • Surfrider Foundation Kaua‘i — Join a scheduled cleanup or borrow a kit from a participating hotel.
